Cover Crop Interseeding Strategies; A Demonstration Farm Perspective with Zak Libertyland Farms

Demonstration Farmer Zak Kenneke discusses his experience interseeding a cover crop mix into a cornfield using a drone application. The goal with interseeding is to establish a cover crop before the corn is harvested to prevent soil erosion and improve soil health. Zak's trying different seeding rates and a diverse mix of species like clovers, buckwheat, and rye grass. Zak recommends starting with a drill for better seed placement if you're just getting started with interseeding, as aerial application can be finicky. Herbicide management is also a key factor for success with interseeding. Reach out to your agronomist for help designing your herbicide plan. **Apologies for the audio. On June 27th 2024, we hosted a field day about soil health. Adam shared when no-till planting it's important to: 🌱Use a closing wheel that will get the seed trench closed. 🚜Ensure you're making good ground contact- a monitor can help with this. 🌽Adjust your planter down pressure! Our presenters also highlighted that Libertyland Farms and several other farms will use a 50/50 or 60/40 mix of wheat and barley for a cover crop mix. 🌾 In most years the barley will winterkill, resulting in a less dense cover crop in the spring. For those who are starting to plant cover crops, this makes management a little easier! Great conversations happened when we stepped into soil health! Interseeding into corn is in full swing around a few passing rain showers. 🌽 After showcasing broadcast interseeding at Libertyland Dairy earlier this week, let's explore interseeding using a drill! This video features Greendale Farm in Fond Du Lac County interseeding into his corn this last week. Dale's mixture, at 20 pounds per acre, includes chicory, flax, plantain, and phacelia. 🌱 Dale utilized a JD 515 drill, spanning 15 feet with 10-inch spacings. He made adjustments by removing 6 openers above the corn rows, replacing them with covers to seal them off. This resulted in 2 openers seeding between the corn rows. Dale installed a pollinator strip last year. When asked why he’s using one, he said, “I had thought about doing a harvestable buffer strip in the past, but I don't have livestock to use the forage, so I never did one. But when I found out about doing a native prairie with a pollinator strip, I thought that would give more benefit than doing a buffer strip. I also wanted to give more, more protection to the wetland here.” In this video, we re-visit the prairie strip 1 year later. Brody Stapel, of Double Dutch Dairy says, “My go-to, and the cover that I always encourage growers that are a little bit afraid of getting started, is to play around with the cover after wheat. I think it's the easiest thing that you can get started with, as a grain farmer, I should say.
